House Technologies

Mechanical Systems

The goal of the mechanical systems in the house is to provide efficient and comfortable heating and cooling of equal or superior quality to conventional systems. In light of these considerations, an all-hydronic approach is employed. The radiant floors take advantage of the natural properties of convection to more efficiently and comfortably distribute the conditioned air. Furthermore, these systems allow for the team to avoid converting the energy of the sun to electricity—the sun directly heats the medium which in turn conditions the house.

Electrical Systems

The Electrical Team seeks to integrate the a sense of convenience and familiarity with technology designed to minimize energy consumption. This will be achieved through sophisticated home automation, the use of strategically located sensors, controlled lighting, and energy efficient appliances. Energy savings will be made possible while maintaining the amenities to which the everyday consumer is accustomed.

Photovoltaic Systems

The array will be mounted on an operable aluminum frame system that allows seasonal adjustment of the tilt. This open back side of the array allows for air to circulate and help cool the panels in the hot summer to increase output.

Lighting Systems

The lighting scheme stems from the concept of consolidation and user interaction, and will be divided into programmed zones activated by the interface operation. These lights will illuminate with user participation and provide only the light necessary for a particular type of use.

Plumbing Systems

The plumbing is designed to re-examine the way water is used and find opportunities for better efficiency.

Appliances

The team considered energy efficiency, asthetics, contest requirements and size when selecting appliances for Solar House 1. Check out what we choose below and then go to www.energystar.gov before you purchase your next appliance.
